Ring around the Rosie
Pocket full of Posies
Ashes to Ashes
We all fall Down...
Pocket full of Posies
Ashes to Ashes
We all fall Down...
The light from the waning crescent moon was dim and left those without another source of light nearly blind as the last lining of daylight tried to close itself from the world.. Autumn was beginning to make its chilling arrival, quieting most other life and making the bitter winds cadence that much more solemn. All were preparing for the long frost that would soon engulf the entire area. Crickets songs were a rare treat and the bedtime chirp of the bird was a distant memory. Now the only winged creatures that were visible were those far above the earth, moving towards their warmer homes, or those brave, or foolish, enough to hold their ground during Winter’s greatest fury.
Breaking from the obscurity of the buildings, moonlight flushed the face of a lone beast, all colors were given a murky characteristic making it appear as a mere specter, the feet of the animal were touching the ground for no more than a moment before they lifted once more. A fluid motion, no urgency could be detected in the creatures movements., just the simplistic enjoyment of the night. Each footfall was carefully placed, avoiding all obstructions even at such speeds. Her own tempo giving rise, clandestinely besting the wind’s own pulsation with hers. Leaves parted, cymbals to her drumming paws. Water splashed, chimes to accent her advance. Now, even the gale joined her in a duet, her percussion joined with the lonely blow of a forlorn flute.
Two amber eyes stared straight from this specters sleek face, piercing the night with their profound gaze. A streamlined body followed these eyes wherever they may decide to wander. Midnight had mixed the gray and black on the pelt, creating a color that blended with the scenery. All philosophy had abandoned this creature. Tonight, she was free. Tonight, she was true Saluki. She ran, almost unconscious of the melody that she was now a part of.
Ash’s thoughts were almost otherworldly. She focused lackadaisically on the world she was sprinting through, instead she was off in a place of almost ancient distinctiveness. A time when she was whole, in mind as well as body. When she had her children and her younger body could withstand runs such as this one with ease. No longer did she wish to contemplate her offspring still within the clutches of human hands, nor the fact that it was only a matter of time before her speed decreased yet another degree, until walking is more a chore than a pleasure.
She was pulled from her wonderland with such abruptness that Ash could hardly determine the difference between the two dimensions. When sight and sense returned to normal, she found herself staring into the mouth of a yawning cavern. The sight of it combined with the illusion she just pulled herself from caused her to believe for a mere moment she was in a dividing line between reality and her dreams which lay within the darkness. However, once true sense took over, she knew exactly what she had stumbled upon. Nothing more than an act of nature, a perfect area for shelter, but only form the material dangers.
Ash knew the dangers of such caves, but curiosity was a pungent sensation. So she stood on the brim, torn between exploration of the unknown and cautious fear from the same unknown.
