It was dawn. The top half of the sun was barely visible above the line of the horizon, a thousand colors bleeding into one another as the reign of night lost its battle. I had been up for hours already, long before the sun started inching into view. I had attempted to sleep soundly in a bed of leaves I had created for myself, but my mind was racing and I couldn’t cease my raging thoughts. I had been wandering the forests lingering on the outskirts of Cascaro due to my boredom, as if I believed that something exciting would jump in front of me. A sheet of snow covered the ground, blanketing the tree limbs above as well as their roots on the ground. Each step forward resulted in a soft crunch, an imprint of my paw left behind in the snow. My eyes drooped slightly, my mitts dragging across the ground. I might have been up for hours, but I was still exhausted. Between the tree tops I could see the sun morph from an inky black tone to multiple hues of orange, red, purple, and blue. The few clouds which lingered in the sky were tainted with various colors which were not originally their own, though within an hour they would return to their traditional white. Watching the sun rise was a beautiful experience, though few had the motivation to wake up early enough to catch it.
I wasn’t a member of Andor, but I had been around long enough to be capable of identifying the pack’s headquarters. Sitting at the top of the city’s tallest cliff was Split Rock Lighthouse, a territory tainted with Andor’s name. The light at the top of the house’s tower still illuminated the city, a beam which could be seen from miles away. At the bottom of the territory was a small building, hardly more than a single, large room. I exited the wooded area and entered a small clearing lingering from the forest’s end to the lighthouse’s beginning. Tall grasses danced and swayed in the wind, a path cutting through them to lead to the lighthouse entrance. I padded across the sandy road, a yawn escaping my vocals. I reached the front door of the building, but hesitated to enter. Instead my attention drifted toward the cliff, my desire to watch the sun finish its ascension into the sky acting stronger than the need for shelter. So I spun on my heel and walked past the lighthouse until I reached my next destination. Once my digits dangled over the cliff’s edge I lowered my hackles to the ground and stared off into the distance, watching as the world went by.[/blockquote]

It was beautiful, there was no denying that. The way the water reflected the rising sun was indescribable, so I merely stared out toward the distance, my eyes tracing the line of the horizon and the clouds lingering in the sky. Cold winds slapped my cheeks, helping me to wake up from my long evening of activity. My breaths came in short inhales and exhales, clouds appearing in front of my muzzle before dispersing out of sight. I wasn’t sure what to do with myself as soon as the sun finished its ascension into the sky. I wasn’t hungry, doubted I could fall asleep, and had no where I could go. I loved being a loner, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it was lonely being on my own all by myself without anyone there to talk to. I sighed a deep breath, slowly rising to all fours in preparation to leave the cliff. I attempted to tear my eyes away from the rising sun, but I couldn’t manage to force myself away. It was so peaceful and tranquil, two things I hadn’t had the chance to have in months. I loved the sound of only waves lapping up against the shores and the calls of bird in the distance, signaling winter’s soon-to-be end. It was no wonder that Andor chose this place for their headquarters, for it was not only secluded but a beautiful spot to relax.
I heard a sound behind me, causing my muscles to tense and my body to freeze. Had an Andor member discovered me on their lands? My muscles slackened as I remember the type of dogs Andor were. They were brave, sure, but they weren’t much of fighters. Most of them would probably let me stay on their land if they were anything like the previous leader. Dakota was it? I wasn’t one to memorize the names of pack leaders, unless they did something memorable. Rolling my eyes I nonchalantly glanced over my shoulder, narrowing my liquid pools to find the canine who had attempted to sneak up on me. “You aren’t being very sneaky,” I told the dog, a white paw catching my eye at the base of the tall grasses. My grin broadened as I turned my body to face the intruder, a strong winter wind causing the sea grass to part. “You might want to work on your –” I started, my words slowing down until my sentence was eventually cut off. Something about this dog seemed familiar, more familiar than what I felt was comfortable. I took a second step closer, lowered my skull, and studied the canine with a keener eye. It only took another moment for me to realize who it was.
“Spencer!” I yelped, sprinting forward and tackling my own friend to the ground. We rolled across the sand for a few feet until my momentum was lost and I landed on my side with a soft plop. Laughing, I rolled back onto all fours and turned to face the ivory male. I shook my crimson coat in hopes of ridding it of the sand which had become lodged in between my fur fibers. I hadn’t seen my old friend in what felt like forever, so it was a relief to see that he was alright. After the sand kicked up into the air had cleared, I realized that something wasn’t quite right. Spencer had injuries scattered across his body, scars left behind from past wounds. My smile melted away as my mind started to race with possibilities of how Spencer was hurt. “Spencer what happened to you?” I asked, padding forward to help him up. “Did something happen?” I inquired, needing answers to my questions. He must have been in a fight, but what over? Spencer was a kind-hearted dog who wouldn’t hurt a fly. My eyes narrowed and muscles tensed in anger. “Who did this to you?” I asked, prepared to hunt down the canine who harmed my only true friend.[/blockquote]

Spencer could sense my hesitation; how could he not? It wasn’t everyday that Spencer appeared out of no where with a collection of battle scars scattered across his body like metals of honor. He tried to ease my anger, narrowing the gap between us and racing his tongue across my muzzle. But even with his acts of kindness, I could tell he was just putting on a strong façade to make me feel better. I narrowed my eyes further, not wanting to drift away from the subject. “Spencer, tell me what happened,” I told him, no emotion to my words. I was dying to know who did this to him – who could do such a thing to a dog like Spencer. I could sense the pain he was struggling to conceal, a soft grown escaping his vocals as he attempted to get back onto all fours after I had tackled him to the ground. My expression softened as I watched him struggling to stand up, every movement causing more pain. I wished I had known earlier that he had been in a fight, but the tall grasses hid his body, as well as his wounds. For the most part he seemed alright, though one of his injuries in particular appeared to be becoming infected, puss seeping out of the gashes. I resisted the temptation to help him stay standing and to clean up his back after I added more dirt to the possible infection. I had asked a question, and now I needed answers.
It took a moment for Spencer to compose his thoughts properly, pain still numbing his muscles and distracting him from what had to be said. My jaw nearly fell open when I heard that his fight had not been a typical street brawl, but a challenge for leadership. Spencer? In a fight for leadership? No offense or anything, but Spencer just didn’t seem like the kind of dog who could challenge a leader for power. I had always known him as the sweet innocent puppy who tripped over his feet which were too big for his body, not as a dog capable of challenging another. My jaw did fall agape when he confessed that he had won the battle, defeating the previous leader of Andor and taking over the pack’s lands. “You ... won?” I repeated in disbelief, testing the words on my own tongue. Even after repeating what Spencer had said they didn’t sound quite right to me. I could see Spencer as a friend, but as a leader? That was something I doubted I would ever get used to. He would always be the clumsy puppy I had met back at the mall, not an adult who ruled over other members of a pack, delivering guidance when needed. How long ago had it been since I first met Spencer? Had it really been long enough that he would be of age to challenge a leader for power? Now that I thought about it, he had changed a lot since the first time we had met. I wanted to ask so many questions, but I held my tongue. Spencer wasn’t done talking quite yet, and hopefully he would answer the questions I was dying to ask.
The beach memory wasn’t what I wanted to think back on, and almost on instinct I flinched at his words. I tried to follow where he was going with his words, but the more he said the more lost I became. I was a strong female, or at least, I tried to be. I didn’t want Spencer to think that he needed an army of dogs to protect me from harm’s way. I didn’t want to be the innocent female he thought of me, for that was the type of persona I was trying so hard to avoid. I looked down at the grass, watching the blades sway in the wind. It wasn’t until the word “love” came up that my eyes drifted back toward his, my heart stopped. Was he saying what I thought he was saying? For the first time in my life, my breath was taken away. “Oh Spencer ... ” I began, trying to think of where to go. Had this been any other dog I would have flipped out on them without question. I would have told him that I didn’t need protection, that I was a strong female who could handle being on my own. But this wasn’t any other male; this was Spencer, the dog who was my first and only real friend. A dog who risked everything just for me, to insure my protection. A weak smile tugged at my lips. How could I not be flattered?
“You didn’t have to do all of this, you know,” I explained to him, taking a few steps forward before parking my carriage directly next to his. I turned my auburn globes toward the rolling waves, watching as one by one they collided against the shores, where they returned to the ocean for the process to start over again, a cycle which never ended. “I’m not that same puppy I was when we first met.” I turned back to look at him. “Then again, neither are you.” I acknowledged the fact that he had asked me a question, and that he was probably waiting at the edge of his seat for my reply. Deciding that I shouldn’t leave him hanging any longer, I replied to his inquiry. “I have to admit, this isn’t what I was expecting to hear from you. I mean, I know nothing about Andor: their lifestyle, their beliefs, the dogs in the pack ... and joining a pack is a big commitment ... ” I broke away from his warm gaze, unable to take the pain which may come to cross his features. I wanted to be with him more than anything, but Andor was probably the last pack I was interested in joining. I exhaled a deep sigh, attempting to sort my thoughts. “I-I don’t know Spencer. I just don’t know.”[/blockquote]
